This includes the disaffiliation petition, championed by traditionalists, that only passed by 2 votes.
The General Conference refuses to release the names or annual conferences of those who committed the fraud, citing ongoing investigations i. All insider views are that these fraudulent voters are from one or more traditionalist conferences in Africa where 31 delegates were unable to secure visas. The head of the delegation and the bishop of each affected annual conference were notified of who did not receive visas. Yet, there they were voting. If the integrity of General Conference is to be restored, all involved must be held accountable, including those who funded the travel for the individuals in question.
This must have been an expensive four votes.

These groups have spent hundreds of thousands of dollars to target central conference votes over the last 20 years. Their activities raise the same red flags we see in our US government with lobbyist gifts and campaign contributions. This activity becomes especially troublesome when you factor in the poverty experienced by many central conference delegates.
A little US money can look like a lot depending on where you are from. The money being thrown around for advocacy at General Conference is a major concern. There needs to be a deep and honest conversation about the dramatic income inequality among delegates and how advocacy can exploit this discrepancy.
Here are just a few of the publicly known, unscrupulous activities by traditionalist US advocacy groups to influence central conference votes at General Conference:. Clearly there are traditionalist US advocacy groups willing to spend hundreds of thousands of dollars to influence votes at General Conference in support of their marginal agenda.

Historically, Centrists and Progressives have refused to engage in these kinds of distasteful practices. The result has been near block voting from delegates in Africa, the Philippines, and Eastern Europe in support of an agenda most Americans have left behind. There is reason to wonder if this most recent voter fraud is a direct outgrowth of the already unscrupulous behavior that continues to plague our church. We will likely never know.
The vote is on page of the DCA. The Rev. Mark R.

This post is republished from the organization's blog. The entire basis of right-wing ideology is bullying and raw naked power. The desire to maintain it justifies the adherents to act unethically, though their goal of dominance and power is itself unethical as well. The entire edifice is a "Potempkin Villiage" - a one-sided facade designed to fool the gullible. No God worth worshiping would bother to create individuals whose love map directs them toward the same gender or into another gender identity besides the one in which they were schooled.
The desperate clinging to power and control is part and parcel of the loss of it.
2016 UMC General Conference
The global church structure mirrors the United States government with judicial, executive and legislative branches. The legislative branch—the General Conference—meets every four years to set church policy. Approximately 1, delegates half lay leaders, half clergy gather to consider revisions to the Book of Resolutions, which makes pronouncements on social issues, and the Book of Discipline, which details church law. Decisions of the General Conference cannot be questioned until they are raised at its next convening. This effort has seen a dramatic increase in clergy and laity who defy church doctrine in an effort to reclaim the Bible's call for justice and inclusion as it applies to marriage and ordination.
Some of these efforts have led to public church trials. It closes loopholes that conservatives believed had allowed some LGBTQ people to be ordained as clergy and some bishops to avoid enforcing the rules. It enacts new across-the-board standards for punishing ministers who perform same-sex weddings: a minimum one-year suspension without pay for the first wedding, and permanent removal from ministry for the second.
But with all due respect, a fixation on money seems more of an American problem than an African one. We get by on far less than most Americans do; we know how to do it. Please understand me when I say the vast majority of African United Methodists will never, ever trade Jesus and the truth of the Bible for money. The American leftists in the UMC wanted to have an immediate temper tantrum. Some even threatened to shut down the proceedings by protest.
